Ferhan & Ferzan Önder play Fazıl Say

In 2018 Fazıl Say composed for Ferhan and Ferzan Önder the Sonata for two pianos, Op. 80, premiered in January 2019 at Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris — the missing piece of the mosaic for this concept album. Ferhan and Ferzan Önder have been closely associated with Fazıl Say for decades: in 2013 they premiered “Winter Morning in Istanbul,” and his Double Concerto, Op. 48 was also written for them. During its composition in May 2013 the Gezi protests shook Turkey, which also influenced Say — he asked the twins how they’d feel about renaming the concerto for two pianos and orchestra “Gezi.” With this work they hope to contribute something to a peaceful, human, free and democratic world. The CD centers on this Concerto for two pianos and orchestra, opens with “Winter Morning in Istanbul,” and closes with the Sonata Op. 80 — an extraordinary homage to Istanbul.
